Even at a very young age, a bad dental occlusion may occur
It is between 4 and 6 years that on average the children sit for the first time in the dentist’s chair. This time span is in fact the moment when they begin to lose the milk teeth, the first molars erupt and, if present, it is possible to detect the first signs of an incorrect dental occlusion.
A pathology of this kind in such small patients may be present due to some bad habits such as: sucking of the finger, pacifier, lip or even an object; atypical deglutition; onychophagia (biting nails).
A study presented in the Journal of the American Dental Association explains that a bad occlusion in the back of the mouth (molar area) is present in 20% of children who continue to use the pacifier or finger up to 4 years of age, in 13 % of those who quit at 2-3 years, and even in a small percentage (7%) of children who suck up to 1-2 years.
